The TWIA crew is back this week with a laser focus on acquisitions that are spreading across Asia, with Transfer-To and Unoh being the biggest beneficiaries, and what’s more with Temasek investing in Tudou, one of the top video sharing sites in China. Of course, we celebrated the final end of Friendster as the company MOL who acquired them, sold the set of social networing patents to Facebook with an exclusive deal of distributing FB credits in Southeast Asia. If you think that news of that nature, what about hearing our friend and guest on the show, Brian Wong has successfully gotten venture capital of $200K with Tru Ventures for his new company Kiip.me and, also possibly one of the youngest entrepreneurs funded in Silicon Valley.
Congratulations to Brian Wong (guest on TWIA Live Show from Open Web Asia KL) for obtaining investment money of $200K from Tru Ventures and possibly the youngest entrepreneur to be funded on his new start-up, Kiip.me (we are still checking this fact out).
Week of Acquisitions in Asia goes on with Ingenico to buy SG’s Transfer. To after TenCube and Zynga to acquire Unoh: in Japan.
The End of Friendster: MOL sold social networking patents to Facebook, recuperated their acquisition costs and then get the exclusive rights to Facebook Credits for Southeast Asia.
Singapore’s Temasek holdings invested US$35M in Todou
Malaysia launch Venture Investment Circle.

With wine and pizza, the crew discussed the news that dominate the Asian landscape – first with everything on Blackberry and their run-ins with the governments of Saudi Arabia and India, some thoughts on recent events from Mark Hurd’s resignation from HP to Google-Verizon’s Net Neutrality proposal and our friends in Hackerspace Hong Kong.
RIM’s run in with Saudi Arabia, India and Russia for the Blackberry: In the three kingdoms world between iPhone, Android and Blackberry, the secure server for RIM now gets requests from different governments that they need a local server.

Technology played a significant part in bringing about this fast changing world. In a simplistic way, we could summarize as follows: The advancement in Computing, Logistics and Telecommunication technology have flattened all forms of supply chain. The end result is a massive Globalization trend.
Nobody is spared. Not even us on this little red dot. To hold our place under the sun, we need to be part of the global technological thrust. We do have many of the ingredients to be successful as a viable innovator over the global technology landscape.
Drawing from his experience as the former HP general manager for the Handheld Products Division as well as the formal CEO of MediaRing, which did pioneering work in the VoIP space, Khaw will talk about the three important trends, which are fundamental to our immediate future as innovator. They are the Sharing Transaction Model in a Knowledge-Based Environment, Life at the perpetual edge of the Internet and the Third Screen. Khaw will also talk about the challenges one will face as an innovator and the joy of giving form to one’s idea. He will illustrate his talk with examples from his past works at HP and MediaRing.”
About The Speaker
Khaw’s Career with HP spanned 26 years and his last assignment was the General Manager of HP’s Hand Held Products Division. Khaw built a world class R/D team in Singapore and the team gave the world its first color PDA, which was featured in a James Bond movie called “The World is not Enough”. Subsequently, the team followed up with the first smart phone based on WinCE platform. The team was influential with Microsoft on the direction of the WinCE platform in the early days. The most notable would be to have Microsoft ported the platform to run on ARM architecture.
Khaw was the CEO of MediaRing for 6 years. MediaRing is one of the leading players in VoIP and successfully delivered an enterprise grade VoIP solution. MediaRing counts the likes of SIA and Republic Poly as its enterprise customers. Its session border controller technology was licensed by the likes of MCI, AT&T and NTT.
Khaw is currently on the Board of SATS and he was the former Board member of the EDB as well as Senoko Power and served on the Advisory Council of Singapore Poly’s Business School. In 2008, Khaw was accepted into the Academy of Distinguished Engineers by Oregon State University in recognition of his various accomplishments in the technology area. Khaw holds a BSEE from Oregon State University, MBA from Santa Clara University and a Technical Diploma from Singapore Poly.

From the company behind online real estate site PropertyGuru and online independent mortgage broker LoanGuru comes a new web property that focuses just on the commercial real estate space: CommercialGuru. Just officially launched earlier today by Allproperty Media Pte. Ltd, it already features over 7,000 commercial properties for sale and rent with detailed information about each property, including maps and photos.
These properties were ported over from PropertyGuru’s commercial section where prior to CommercialGuru, there were “already 40,000 users viewing 500,000 pages per month,” said Steve Melhuish, CEO of Allproperty Media.
CommercialGuru.
Now, clicking on the Search button in the Commercial section of PropertyGuru brings one straight to CommercialGuru.
In an interview with ZDNet Asia, Chief Marketing Officer Winnie Khoo said that “the site is not expected to be profitable within the next 12 months. . . . the company expects to spend a total of S$1 million (US$737,137) before the site is in the black. The company spent S$300,000 (US$221,141) during the six-month research and IT development period, as well as another S$300,000 on marketing.”
This means that the company is expecting a monthly burn rate of about SGD 33K (1M – 600K = 400K to be spent over the next 12 months) – perhaps to finance a team of 5-7 business development and sales people with some money set aside for additional marketing expenses? To break even after 12 months, the company must aim to bring in an average monthly revenue of more than SGD 80K.

In line with their Rise Above campaign, Martell VSOP introduced The Ultimate Start-Up Space (TUSS) in January.
The campaign aimed to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to share their ideas about how best to use the 760 sq ft Ultimate Start-Up Space in Clarke Quay and ultimately reward them by providing additional support and funding to turn their ideas into reality.
The Martell VSOP Ultimate Start-up campaign was partly inspired by the exploits of its founder, Jean Martell,
who arrived from Jersey in 1715 and founded the House of Martell in France at the age of 21.
We want to hear your thoughts about the campaign and hope that you can share them by completing our survey.
As a token of appreciation, 3 readers who complete the survey will receive a bottle of Martell VSOP.

About
The campaign was certainly one of its kind as participants were tasked to send in a 60-second video elevator pitch detailing how they would utilize the 760 sq ft “Ultimate Start-Up Space” in Clarke Quay (rent-free for 6 months) which was up for grabs.
TUSS, which took place between January and March this year, attracted more than 200 participants over a 2 month submission period. Ideas ran the gamut from using the space for a gourmet sandwich boutique to opening a Cosplay Cafe and there were many hidden gems buried in the pile.
The 10 ideas which showed the most originality, creativity and greatest potential for success were eventually selected to move on to the final round of judging.
Finally, after receiving business management training by INSEAD and financial planning training by Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore, each finalist then had to write up a 10 page business plan which was reviewed by the panel of judges before a winner was eventually selected.
Prizes
Besides being able to use the 760 sq ft space at Clarke Quay rent free for 6 months, winners were also awarded funding worth S$20,000 (renovation fund from Pernod-Ricard Singapore (Martell VSOP)), and an Executive Education Programme from INSEAD.
Additionally, all 10 finalists received received training from top notch institutions:
1. Business entrepreneurship training from INSEAD
2. Special bundle of banking services and entrepreneurship coaching from Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore
The Chupitos Bar Wins The Ultimate Start-Up Space

The ladies proposed to use the 760 sq ft of prime space to open Singapore’s first specialized chupitos bar (chupitos means shots in Spanish) after sampling a variety of interesting shots on their backpacking adventures.
Customers would be served a wide range of shots with flavours ranging from the traditional to the downright quirky. Most importantly, The Chupitos Bar also aims to carve a reputation as one that served innovative and exciting shots as well.
